An unorthodox biopic about Carlos Castaneda, 60ies cultural icon and author of The Teachings of Don Juan, takes the form of fragmented portraiture, touching on failures of love, power relationships and myth-making.
In a series of Californian road trips projected realities become as contradictory, as the wildly differing characters encountered in this film.
The filmmaker meets a concoction of Castaneda associates who are all invested in telling her about the man. But what remains in shadow is the story of five disappeared women believed to have been part of Castaneda’s ‘harem’, as well as the discovery of bones at the edge of Death Valley, belonging to one of the missing women. Trying to find out what hooked these women on the cultish guru figure the filmmaker unveils some uncomfortable ‘truths’ she was unaware of, about herself.
